When to go
Visit Sweden says the aurora is visible in Kiruna September to March. Early December to early January is polar night; February–March pairs dark nights with longer days.
The Icehotel is rebuilt every winter; its winter section usually opens from December to early April, alongside the year-round Icehotel 365.
Weather and clouds
Where to watch
Town lights wash out faint aurora; 10–20 minutes out of town is enough.
- Jukkasjärvi and the Torne River: The Icehotel village, about 15 minutes away. The frozen river gives a wide, open horizon.
- Luossavaara hill: North of town, panoramic but close to city light.
- Nikkaluokta road: A dark, quiet route west towards the mountains.
- Abisko: About an hour's drive when cloud covers Kiruna.
Getting there and where to stay
Because of mining subsidence, Kiruna is moving a few kilometres east; the new centre opened in 2022 and the move is expected to run until 2035. Historic buildings such as the church are being moved whole.
You can stay in town and join tours, or stay in Jukkasjärvi by the river in a darker setting. The Esrange space centre's visitor centre is free and a good option for a cloudy day.
Safety and cold
NASA POWER puts the January mean at about -13 °C, and clear nights get much colder. Protect hands, face and feet; keep camera batteries in an inside pocket.
Stay out of the fenced deformation zones near the mine. On frozen rivers and lakes use only marked snowmobile tracks.
