Arvidsjaur lies at 65.58° N in Norrbotten, Sweden, about 109 km south of the Arctic Circle. Its geomagnetic latitude of about 63.6° is just south of the usual auroral oval. Aurora is seen on many active nights, often low in the northern sky, and the oval's edge reaches this far south from about Kp 2. A dark, clear night has roughly a 51% chance of some aurora.
Nights with at least two hours of real darkness run from late August to late April; in the light summer nights between, the aurora cannot be seen. Around the winter solstice the sun is more than 12° below the horizon for about 15 hours a day.
Clouds decide most nights. The hourly score above uses the live cloud forecast for this exact spot; for trip planning, the Kiruna guide (257 km away) covers the best months and clear-night odds for the wider region.
